Sour Lake is a city in Hardin County, Texas. The population was 1,667 at the 2000 census. It was originally named Sour Lake Springs, after the mineral-laden spring water that flowed into the nearby lake. The city is part of the Beaumont–Port Arthur Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sour Lake was first settled around 1835, when Stephen Jackson received 4,428 acres at the site. Oil discoveries in July 1902, however, made Sour Lake a boomtown, where the population sometimes numbered 10,000, where peak oil production reached 50,000 barrels daily, and where as many as fifty-two saloons operated at one time. community is noted for the Sour Lake Hardin County Fair. www.tshaonline.org
