Portland is a city in San Patricio County in the U.S. state of Texas. A very small portion of the city extends into Nueces County. The population of Portland was 14,827 at the 2000 census. Portland was the dream of John G. Willacy,qv who merged the New England Land Company of Portland, Maine, the New England Real Estate Company, and the Portland Harbor and Improvement Company of Wichita, Kansas, into a working unit and purchased 1,920 acres of land from the Coleman-Fulton Pasture Company in 1891. Portland located on a high bluff overlooking the Nueces Bay quickly became a resort active in both summer and winter.
