Porter is an unincorporated area in Montgomery County, Texas within the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area. In 1980, its population estimated 8,000. Schools in Porter are operated by the New Caney Independent School District. Porter was founded in the late 1800s and was the county seat from 1896 to 1915. Porter's most famous resident has probably been Robert L. Crippen, who became a National Aeronautics and Space Administration astronaut in 1969 and was pilot for the space shuttle Columbia in 1981. www.tshaonline.org
