Midlothian is a city in northwest Ellis County, Texas. The population was 7,480 at the 2000 census. Colonization of Midlothian did not truly occur until 1843 when the Republic of Texas completed peace treaties with local Native American tribes. The original name of the area was Hawkins' Spring after one of the original settlers of the area Alden Hawkins. The name Midlothian did not apear until 1882 or '83, when a Scottish train engineer allegedly suggested the name in honor of a location in his home country. Midlothian the "Cement Capitol of Texas" on Highway 287 as well as the Southern Pacific, Sante Fe, Atchison, and Topeka Railroads, is a center for trade including foreign markets. Midlothian's easy access to the DFW Metroplex coupled with its transportation facilities has contributed to its becoming a destribution center for imports.
