Malakoff is a city in Henderson County, Texas. The population was 2,257 at the 2000 census. Malakoff joins Odessa, Moscow and Sebastopol as another Texas town named after a Russian city. Malakoff started out with a different name in this case two:Caney Creek and Mitcham Chapel. In 1854, they applied for a Post Office under the name Mitcham or Purdon, but both names were being used. It is generally accepted that the name Malakoff was suggested by postal authorities in Washington-on-the-Potomac, after a city important in the Crimean War. Curiously in the 1930's heads similar to those Olmec heads found in the Mexican states of Tabasco and Veracruz were discovered here and are known together as the "Malakoff Man". Their origin remains a mystery.
