Jacksboro is a city in Jack County, Texas. The population was 4,533 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Jack County. Originally called Mesquiteville, the community grew up in the pastureland near Keechi Creek. It was renamed Jacksboro in 1858 when it became the county seat, in honor of brothers William and Patrick Jack, veterans of the Texas Revolution. After the Civil War Jacksboro was the westernmost settlement in Texas although it was in ruins and barely survived Indian raids until Fort Richardson was built just south of the town in 1870 effectively protecting the population.
